School can be a place to live with
The project began with a reflexion about the existing old school where we have conserved an industrial building to convert into a CHILD & FAMILY area.
Two internal courtyards define the spaces. The largest one is bordered by the spaces dedicated to the school while, along the Rue Simons, we have 50 flats divided in different types: 17 duplex types with a private hanging garden with an exposure on both school courtyards and mixed apartments in the corner between Rue Simons and Chaussée d’Anvers. All of these with a perfect orientation NORTH – SOUTH
The main entry of the school is in Rue Nicolay, a one-way street that forces the direction of the traffic flow where we have reserved a “Kiss&Drive” zone in a quiet and reassuring area
Orientation and location
The configuration of the housing is provided for them to be traversing, except apartments on the corner of the street and the pavement Simons Antwerp which present two fronts street. A maximum of the housing present their day area in the south (towards the internal courtyard) and night areas in the north (street side Simons). This arrangement allows each unit to take advantage of multiple views, cross ventilation and make the most of direction.
Breakthrough in the building
The provision included in the specification that enables us to provide housing above the school was selected. We therefore propose to find there 13 “houses” whose terraced concierge school.
The establishment in cantilevered on the roof of the school of these houses used to complete this house typology by including a small garden in the South. These gardens offer the comfort of a “buffer zone” between, on the one hand the houses and the corridor that serves and also between the school and the housing part of the project. The Concierge retains direct access to the school by the second floor of the renovated part.
The B ring has an ’empty’ in the 1st and 2nd floor. Beyond the desire to give all some visual permeability and enhance the prospects of the building, this breakthrough enables the establishment of an extra bay taking two duplex and two large apartments.
